Apples Preschool Theme

Tuesday, August 28, 2018
Fall is ALMOST here, so it is time for one of my favorite themes, APPLES!

These activities come from my Apple Preschool Pack in my TPT shop!

I wanted both boys to join in on the fun, so a lot of the activities were adapted for Grayson (21 months). We started with a sensory tray of red, yellow, and green pom poms. Grayson worked on sorting the pom poms onto colored trees. Hayden worked on counting different amounts of each color apple on the tree.

Next, one of our favorite experiments. Apple Volcanos!! This was super easy. I cut a hole in the center of the apple. We scooped in some baking soda. Then, the boys squired vinegar in! Always a fun reaction.

Writing is a difficult skill, so I try to provide lots of practice for Hayden. For this, he read each letter, traced each letter, and then wrote it on his own. I adapted this activity for Gray too! Instead of writing the letters, he placed an alphabet magnet at the bottom.

Apple Measurement- Measure each apple with seeds, erasers, or counters.

We read, Ten Apples Up on Top, and then counted apple stickers on a number line.

We love to incorporate art into our learning. Hayden worked on apple patterns, and Grayson was identifying the colors! There is also a recording page included, if you want your child to document the patterns created!

Grayson worked on finger-painting apples onto a toilet paper tube apple tree. He HATES getting messy, so this was hilarious to watch!

For years, these attribute apples were on my wish list. Last year I caved and bought them, and couldn't be happier. These apples are adorable, and SO MUCH FUN! They are perfect for sorting, counting, and all sorts of apple themed fun! I made a tree out of painters tape, and they balanced along the lines to gather and sort apples.

Hayden worked on comparing numbers, by building apple towers. Which is taller? Which is shorter? How many more can we add to make ten?

Have you ever dyed chick peas? They turn out AWESOME! A few drops of liquid watercolor and vinegar. Shake in a bag, and then open and let dry!!! Hayden used a magnetic wand to grab the apples, and trace them on the recording page. This activity also comes with sight word apples.

Next up we worked on reading CVC words by sliding the worms through the apple. If your child isn't ready for CVC words, you could writing the beginning letter on the sticks, instead of words!

We worked on a little apple addition with those attribute apples!

Working on fine motor skills AND counting by stringing beads aka apples, onto spaghetti.

Name crafts are one of my favorite ways to encourage writing. Hayden always loves glue and scissors, so its always a win for him!

Fine motor count and clip apple trees. He counted the apples in each tree, and clipped the clothespin with that same number.

He used ink and his thumb to count and dab apples into each basket.

We didn't get to everything in my apple pack, but here are a few other activities that are included. This is an apple color sort. Throw in some fine motor tools to  work those finger muscles too!

My boys always love play dough mats. Rolls balls of play dough, or use pom poms to count apples onto each tree. Trace each number with dry erase marker.

Apple Tree Alphabet Sort- Draw apple trees and write a letter on each tree. Sort letter beads onto each tree.

And no unit is complete without play dough! These are play dough shape mats!

Ten and double ten frame counting cards are included in the pack. Use mini erasers, or apple counters to recreate the number on the ten frame.

This was SUCH a fun theme! I am sure we could have continued doing apple activities for the entire month, but onto the next theme!!!

Muffin Tin Drop- We used our handy scoopers to count and drop apples into a muffin tin.

Number Hunt- I wrote numbers 1-10 on apple and hid them around the house. My son found each apple, crossed it off the list, and then ordered the numbers.

Roll and Dot- Draw an apple tree and write numbers on the tree. Flip over a playing card. Use a dot marker and dot that number on the tree.

Fizzy Apple Painting- We mixed up fizzy paint (baking soda and paint). He painted the apple. Then, squirted vinegar on the painting!

Contact Paper Sort- I covered construction paper in contact paper. Then my son sorted and stuck pom poms onto each tree.

Apple Pie Sensory Bin- We used mini pie tins, apples, and beans to pretend to make apple pies!

Apple Water Play- We threw our apples in water and my boys had a blast!

Read and Dot Apple Tree- My son practiced sight words as he read and dotted each 'apple'.

Tear and Glue Apple- Ripping paper is such a great way to practice fine motor skills! Rip paper into pieces and glue onto the apple.

Build an Apple Tree- We used pom poms, tubes, pinecones, and popsicle sticks to build apple trees. It was fun to see how many 'apples' each tree can hold!
