When my son started to read sight words, he did a great job reading each word individually, but reading a sentence freaked him out! So, I make sight word fluency sticks. IT WAS AMAZING. All of a sudden, he was confident in his reading!
The sight word fluency sticks are a part of my reading program, Grow a Reader. Each day, he would read as many sticks as he could in one minute. As he mastered sets of 4-5 sight words, I added new sticks to his jar. It was unbelievable to see his progress as he soared through this program. Our sight word stick jar is now overflowing as he finished the Dolch Pre-Primer words and is moving on.
These fluency sticks would be great for homeschooling families, or those who would like to help their child at home, or as a reading center. But I know that it wouldn't translate well to a classroom of 25 students. SO.... I used the same concept to make these Sight Word Fluency, Flip and Read Books.
Below are the Dolch Primer Sight Words Flip and Read Books. I divided the sight word list into 9 sets of 5/6 sight words. As the child masters those sight words, they move along to the next set of words. For each set, the child would practice the words. Then, flip and read the sight word phrases. There are 18 phrases for each set of words.
Print each set on colored cardstock to differentiate. Hole punch the sets, and attach to a binder ring for convenience. Your students can move through the sets at their own pace, as they master each set of sight words.
Then, there is an easy game, like tic-tac-toe to practice those words!
There is a student tracking page. Your students can color a star each time they read through the set of words correctly.
There is also a teacher tracking sheet, to easily track which set your student is on.
Right now, I have the Pre-Primer Flip and Read
Primer Sight Word Flip and Read,
and the Second Grade Flip and Read.
